There are ancient and modern wonders of the world, wonders of nature, and under the sea; some countries have even voted to find their own seven wonders. At one time in history, Portugal was a powerful and wealthy country and this can be seen in its beautiful architecture from castles and palaces to monasteries. 1. Alcobaca Monastery, Alcobaca

A 12th-century Cistercian monastery that requires a small entrance fee to visit.

 

2. Batalha Monastery, Batalha

This medieval Gothic monastery can be visited with a small admission fee.

 

3. Belem Tower, Lisbon

A medieval fortification on the river and also designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. It can be visited with a small entrance fee.

 

 

4. Castle of Guimaraes, Guimaraes

An 11th-century Romanesque castle that you can visit with a small admission fee.

 

5. Castle of Obidos, Obidos

While this 9th-century medieval castle isn't open to the public, it operates as a hotel you can stay in.

In July there is a Medieval Festival in Obidos complete with costumes, a market, entertainment, and food from the era.

 

6. Jeronimos Monastery, Lisbon

This Gothic Manueline castle is also on the UNESCO World Heritage list and can be visited with a small fee.

 

7. Pena Palace, Sintra

A colorful19th-century Romanticist palace that can be visited by booking a reservation ahead of time with a smaller fee.
